Nature's Sprawl - Urban Newgrowth by AR&S Featured Artist Diego Narvaez

Some Place Better Than Where You've Been, Diego Narvaez, Oil on canvas, 51" x 83"

Nature’s Sprawl - Urban Newgrowth is a series of oil paintings by Diego Narvaez that blurs the boundary between natural and urban environments. Through the juxtaposition of nature and the city, he challenges us to consider how we relate to the spaces we shape and inhabit.

Narvaez observes his surroundings through a process of sketching, painting, note-taking, and photography. From this process emerge sublime landscape paintings that address the ways we relate to our environment. For Narvaez, landscape painting has a revolutionary power to help us observe and slow down in a world that prioritizes productivity and output. It invites us to forget about the barrage of images that vie for our minds’ attention, and instead to really look at a place—to feel its pulse.

Diego Narvaez was born in Mexico City and currently resides in Sooke, BC. He holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Narvaez was recently the recipient of a multi-year grant through Mexico’s National Endowment for Culture and Arts (FONCA).
